Manipur’s Bishnupur District Tackles Plastic Waste Amid Flood Aftermath
Imphal: The local administration in Manipur’s Bishnupur district has joined forces with residents near the Ithai Barrage to tackle the cleanup efforts following the recent floods. The post-flood impact has been severe, with plastic and solid waste clogging the drainage system and posing a significant challenge.
According to Dr. Brajakumar Singh, Director of Environment & Climate Change, the plastic and debris in the Ithai Barrage is as deep as 5-6 feet. To address this issue, the authorities have started clearing the plastic waste with the assistance of local youth and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
As of the third day of the cleaning operation, around 5,000 bags of plastic waste have been collected. The local administration is working in coordination with various departments, including the Minor Irrigation Department and Water Resources Department, to address waterlogging across several locations in Manipur.
The Minor Irrigation Department has initiated dewatering efforts at key flood-affected locations, using 25 HP pumps to alleviate the situation. The efforts aim to restore normalcy and mitigate the impact of the floods on the affected communities.
The recent floods, caused by relentless rainfall, have had a significant impact on the region, with roads submerged and daily life disrupted. The cleanup efforts are crucial in preventing further damage and ensuring the well-being of the residents.
