Manipur MLAs Meet Governor Over Unrest and Arrests

A delegation of 25 MLAs and one Member of Parliament met with Governor Ajay Bhalla to express deep concern over the escalating unrest in five districts of Manipur. The meeting came after overnight violence erupted following the arrest of Kanan Singh, a key leader of the Meitei group Arambai Tenggol. The delegation, comprising MLAs from various parties, sought clarification and intervention from the governor amid curfews and communication blackouts.

Congress MLA Okram Surjakumar voiced concerns over the arrest of five individuals associated with Arambai Tenggol, stating that the public remains uninformed about the grounds for these arrests. The delegation urged the Governor to ensure transparency in such sensitive actions. BJP MLA Kh Ibomcha, who was part of the delegation, emphasized the non-hostile stance of the government toward Arambai Tenggol and requested the release of the detained members.

The situation spiraled out of control after Singh’s arrest late last night, triggering widespread panic, road blockades, and spontaneous shutdowns in multiple areas. Authorities have imposed Section 144, restricting the assembly of four or more individuals in several districts, while a total curfew has been enforced in Bishnupur district to restore order. Visuals from East and West Imphal depict the aftermath of the overnight violence, with roads blocked, shops shut, and heavy police deployment across sensitive zones.

According to Kh Ibomcha, Kanan Singh’s arrest is linked to a CBI investigation, while the other four individuals were detained due to their association with him at the time of the incident. The government has assured that verification is underway, and those found uninvolved will be released.
