Yunus Government’s Election Announcement Branded a ‘State-Sponsored Drama’ by BSL President

Dhaka: In a blistering retort to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s recent announcement of general elections in April 2026, Saddam Hussain, the fiery President of the Bangladesh Students League (BSL), has vehemently lambasted the interim government, characterising the move as nothing short of a “state-sponsored drama.” His remarks, delivered to a throng of reporters on Tuesday, underscore a rapidly escalating political temperature in Bangladesh.

Hussain, who heads the student wing of the now-proscribed Bangladesh Awami League, was unsparing in his criticism, asserting that the election announcement was a mere smokescreen designed to deflect from the government’s true intentions. “The elections are not the priority of this government. This is just a state-sponsored drama. They will use this for their own purpose,” he alleged, painting a picture of a regime driven by self-interest rather than democratic principles.

The BSL leader did not shy away from highlighting the interim government’s rigorous clampdown on political opposition, particularly the ban on the Bangladesh Awami League. “They banned the Bangladesh Awami League, a party with deep roots in the country’s democratic history. This regime has no legitimacy. The people of Bangladesh are waiting for a democratic representative to govern the country,” Hussain declared, questioning the very foundation of the current administration.

Further escalating his allegations, Hussain accused the Yunus-led administration of a brazen misuse of state apparatus. “Muhammad Yunus is using the state machinery for his own personal agenda… The present government has no control over the law and order situation,” he claimed, implying a pervasive rot within the system and a breakdown of governance.

Concluding his fiery address, Hussain issued a stark rallying cry for the removal of the current regime. “For restoring democracy in Bangladesh, we have no other option than the removal of this current fascist regime,” he asserted, signalling a potential for intensified agitation and civil unrest in the coming months.

As of now, the interim government has maintained a conspicuous silence on Hussain’s provocative statements. Nevertheless, Muhammad Yunus’s election announcement has already garnered significant national and international scrutiny, positioning Bangladesh at a precarious political juncture following the sweeping suspension of several prominent political parties. The nation watches with bated breath, as political factions, civil society organisations, and the international community await further developments, hoping for a return to democratic norms amidst palpable tension and uncertainty.
