Green Mizoram Day Celebrated with Renewed Commitment to Environmental Protection
Aizawl: Mizoram observed Green Mizoram Day on Wednesday, reaffirming its dedication to environmental protection and sustainable development. This year’s theme, ‘Plant Trees and Catch the Rain,’ underscores the significance of afforestation in water conservation and ecosystem resilience.
The state Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister, Lalthansanga, attended the main event in Thenzawl town, Serchhip district, where he highlighted the vital role trees play in preserving groundwater, preventing soil erosion and sustaining biodiversity. He urged citizens to actively participate in safeguarding Mizoram’s rich natural heritage.
Governor General (Rtd) Vijay Kumar Singh and his wife Bharti Singh participated in the celebrations by planting the state tree, ‘Hershe,’ at Raj Bhavan premises. Singh stressed the urgent need for intensified afforestation efforts in the face of the escalating global climate change crisis.
Official functions were held in all district headquarters, accompanied by mass ceremonial tree plantation drives across Mizoram. Since its inception in 1999, Green Mizoram Day has led to the planting of over 46 lakh trees across the state, solidifying its commitment to environmental conservation.
During the celebration, awards were presented to districts and villages that excelled in fire prevention. Lunglei District secured the first prize, followed by Serchhip District and Aizawl District. Additionally, awards were given to communities that contributed significantly to nature and wildlife conservation, and afforestation efforts in Mizoram.
