Heatwave Intensifies in Northeast, Meghalaya Hits Record Temperatures
Shillong: Several cities and towns across Northeast India, including Shillong in Meghalaya, have been experiencing intense heat and humidity, with temperatures soaring well beyond the seasonal average over the past few days. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast the continuation of hot and humid weather across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya for the next 24 hours.
According to the RMC bulletin, maximum temperatures are likely to remain three to five degrees Celsius above normal across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience warm nights. On Wednesday, Shillong recorded a maximum temperature of 27.6°C, 3.9°C above normal, while Guwahati scorching at 37.4°C, 4.9°C above normal.
Despite the heatwave-like conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted possible relief in the form of isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Meteorologists have attributed the persistent heat and humidity to prevailing atmospheric conditions.
Residents have been advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. The IMD’s forecast and warnings serve as a reminder to take necessary precautions during this period of intense heat and humidity. As the region grapples with the heatwave, the IMD’s predictions will be closely monitored for any signs of relief.
Other cities in the region have also reported high temperatures, including Dibrugarh (37.3°C), Tezpur (37.1°C), Itanagar (38.6°C), Pasighat (38.4°C), Agartala (35.6°C), and Kohima (29.6°C). The heatwave is expected to continue, with temperatures remaining above normal in the coming days.
