Tragedy Strikes as Air India Flight Crashes Near Ahmedabad Airport
National: A devastating incident unfolded on Thursday, June 12, when an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, flight AI-171, plummeted to the ground shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The aircraft, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, was carrying 242 individuals, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
The incident sent shockwaves across the political spectrum, with leaders expressing their deepest condolences. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu conveyed his profound sorrow, stating that he was “shocked and devastated” by the tragic event. “I’m personally monitoring the situation, and all agencies have been directed to respond swiftly,” he posted on social media. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also took to social media, saying, “Deeply shocked to learn about the flight crash in Ahmedabad. Our prayers are with the passengers and their families.”
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel confirmed that intensive rescue operations were underway, with emergency response teams, fire engines, and rescue personnel dispatched to the crash site. “I have directed officials to initiate immediate rescue and relief efforts and ensure that the injured receive urgent medical attention,” he said, adding that arrangements for a green corridor were being made to facilitate swift transportation of the injured. Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured full central assistance, including deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav urged the government to issue an official explanation, seeking clarity on the incident. “There must be an immediate explanation to remove doubts surrounding the Ahmedabad plane crash. Prayers for all passengers and crew. The highest level of rescue, relief, and treatment must be provided,” he emphasized. Other leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, also expressed their anguish and prayed for the safety of those on board.
The flight carried 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian citizen. Reports indicate that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the passengers, although his status remains unconfirmed. Air India has set up a dedicated passenger hotline number, 1800 5691 444, to provide support to families and loved ones affected by the tragedy.
