Assam Police Nabs Five with Rs 6.5 Crore Drugs in Sribhumi, CM Praises Efforts
Guwahati: In a significant blow to the narcotics trade, Assam Police have apprehended five individuals and confiscated illicit drugs valued at an estimated Rs 6.5 crore in the Sribhumi district. The operation, executed with precision based on credible intelligence, saw the seizure of 44,000 Yaba tablets from the Veterbond area, leading to the immediate arrest of the five suspected peddlers.
Following the successful interdiction, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his congratulations to the Assam Police force. In a post on X late Thursday night, the Chief Minister confirmed that all necessary legal procedures have been initiated against the arrested individuals, reaffirming the state’s stringent stance against drug trafficking.
The seized substance, Yaba, which translates to ‘crazy medicine’ in Thai, is a banned narcotic known to contain methamphetamine, classified as a Schedule II substance under the Controlled Substances Act, alongside caffeine. Its presence in such large quantities underscores the ongoing challenges posed by illegal drug networks.
This latest success comes on the heels of another major drug bust in the Cachar district, where Assam Police had earlier seized drugs worth Rs 45 crore. That operation also resulted in the arrest of four individuals on charges of drug peddling, with a substantial quantity of Yaba tablets recovered during two consecutive raids. Chief Minister Sarma had then lauded the Cachar Police, emphasising the crucial role of such operations in dismantling larger narcotics networks and reiterating, “Assam Police stands firm in protecting our youth.”
