Meghalaya Cabinet Approves Major Tourism and Connectivity Initiatives Near Umiam Lake
Shillong: In a strategic move to bolster Meghalaya’s tourism and infrastructure sectors, the state Cabinet has approved the leasing of 273 acres of unutilised land near the scenic Umiam Lake to the tourism department. Owned by the Meghalaya Electric Corporation Ltd and its subsidiaries, the land will be leased for 60 years, with an option to extend for an additional 30 years. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister and Cabinet spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh, who detailed plans to monetise the area through a series of ambitious tourism projects.
The tourism department aims to utilise the natural beauty of the Umiam Lake area by introducing premium ventures such as five-star hotels and lake cruise services. These initiatives are expected to begin within the next year and are projected to enhance the state’s tourism profile, attract a greater number of visitors, and generate long-term revenue for Meghalaya. The government envisions the area becoming a vibrant tourist hub that complements the state’s broader tourism goals.
In another key decision, the Cabinet also gave the green light to the Chief Minister’s Regional Connectivity Scheme 2025. This scheme is designed to improve transportation networks by launching new bus services linking district centres, block headquarters, and regional nodes. The initiative is part of the government’s wider efforts to boost regional mobility, making travel more accessible for both residents and tourists.
Together, these developments mark a significant push by the Meghalaya government to promote sustainable economic growth through tourism and improved transport infrastructure. By leveraging the state’s natural and cultural assets, the Cabinet’s latest approvals are expected to position Meghalaya as a leading destination in the Northeast.
