Guwahati: A pall of grief and disquiet hangs over Dima Hasao district in Assam following the tragic demise of Rosmita Hojai, whose body was discovered on the banks of the Ganga in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. The circumstances surrounding her death, five days after being reported missing, have spurred a powerful appeal from Assam’s political echelons to the Uttarakhand government, demanding a meticulous and time-bound investigation.

Rosmita Hojai had journeyed to Delhi to sit for a Railway Recruitment Board examination, subsequently proceeding to Rishikesh accompanied by two individuals. Her sudden disappearance and the grim discovery of her body have sent ripples of concern through her community, igniting a widespread demand for answers and accountability.

Gaurav Gogoi, the President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has formally penned a request to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, imploring him to initiate a “swift, transparent, and thorough enquiry” into the matter. Gogoi’s plea highlights the pressing need for a detailed probe to ensure justice is served for Hojai and her grieving family, underscoring the deep unease prevalent within her community.

Adding weight to the appeal, Gogoi specifically urged the Uttarakhand Chief Minister to “personally look into the matter and direct the concerned authorities to expedite the investigation.” This direct appeal underscores the gravity and urgency of the situation, reflecting the community’s fervent desire for swift resolution and justice from the authorities.

Echoing the sentiment, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has also reached out to his Uttarakhand counterpart, advocating for a “comprehensive and time-bound” investigation. Sarma emphasised the imperative to examine “all possible angles” to fully comprehend the incident and to ascertain any potential criminal involvement, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of truth.

Both Gogoi and Sarma stand united in their insistence that any individuals found culpable be “identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with the law so that justice is delivered.” This shared resolve aims to restore faith in the investigative processes and ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done, and without undue delay.

The untimely passing of Rosmita Hojai has resonated far beyond her immediate community, sparking broader concerns about the safety of individuals venturing across state lines for educational or employment prospects. The urgent calls for a thorough investigation are a testament to the pressing need to address these systemic concerns, with the hope of preventing such heartbreaking incidents from recurring in the future. As the investigation gets underway, it remains paramount for the concerned authorities to act with decisiveness and unwavering transparency, ensuring a swift resolution to the case and the delivery of justice. This tragic incident undeniably underscores the critical need for enhanced safety protocols and measures for individuals pursuing opportunities away from the security of their home regions.
