Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has directed the Director General of Police to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the perplexing death of Rosmita Hojai, an Assam resident whose body was tragically found in the Ganga River near Rishikesh. Hailing from the Dima Hasao district, Hojai had gone missing on June 6th while on a visit to the holy town, with her body surfacing five days later, triggering widespread concern among political circles in Assam.
The directive came swiftly following a letter from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the gravity of the situation. Chief Minister Dhami conveyed his commitment to a fair and transparent investigation through a social media post, stating, “We share your concern Hon’ble CM Shri @himantabiswa Ji. We are committed to ensuring a fair, transparent, and timely investigation.” Assam’s Chief Minister had specifically called for a thorough and time-bound inquiry, urging that all possible aspects surrounding Hojai’s demise be meticulously examined.
Sources indicate that Rosmita Hojai had initially travelled to Delhi to appear for a Railway Recruitment Board examination, and subsequently proceeded to Rishikesh with two companions. In his appeal for justice, Assam CM Sarma had emphatically demanded the identification and prosecution of any individuals found culpable, should foul play be established in her death.
Adding to the growing chorus for a prompt resolution, Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, also reached out to Chief Minister Dhami, urging an expedited investigation. Gogoi articulated the deep distress caused by the incident, noting, “The circumstances surrounding her disappearance and subsequent death are deeply troubling and have raised serious concerns among her family, friends, and the wider community.” He underscored the critical need to hasten the probe to offer closure to Hojai’s grieving family.
This tragic event has initiated crucial dialogue between the leadership of both states, underscoring the vital significance of inter-state cooperation in addressing such sensitive matters. Authorities in Uttarakhand have pledged to meticulously pursue every available lead to unearth the complete facts behind Rosmita Hojai’s untimely passing, ensuring that justice is served.
