Manipur Unites in Grief to Honour Two Cabin Crew Victims of Air India Crash
Imphal: In a heartfelt display of unity and shared sorrow, Manipur came together to honour the lives of two of its own — Kongrabailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, a Meitei from Thoubal, and Lamnunthem Singson, a Kuki from Kangpokpi — who perished in the tragic Air India crash near Ahmedabad on June 12. The London-bound Boeing 787 flight, which crashed shortly after take-off, claimed the lives of all 241 people on board, including the two young cabin crew members from the state.
A joint condolence programme was held in Thoubal, bringing together people across communities and backgrounds to mourn the irreplaceable loss. Organised by People for Animals Manipur, Social Reformation Union Thoubal, and the Social Service and Welfare Association Thoubal, the event was a solemn tribute to the victims, highlighting the deep impact of the tragedy on the local community.
Students from several educational institutions — The Fancier Higher Secondary School, The Vision Creative School of Science, MM RENT Thoubal Wangmataba Sorok Makha, and Nimaichand and Keinya High School — participated in the gathering, adding a poignant sense of youth solidarity and respect to the event.
Speakers and attendees expressed condolences to the bereaved families, offering prayers and tributes that transcended community lines. The joint mourning served as a rare moment of collective unity in a state often marked by social and ethnic tensions. The loss of Nganthoi and Singson has left an indelible mark on the people of Manipur, who came together not only to grieve, but also to remember their courage and dedication in service.
