From Bargolai to the Battlefield: Assam Youth Commissioned as Lieutenant in Indian Army
Guwahati: In a moment of pride and inspiration for the remote village of Bargolai in Assam’s 83rd Margherita constituency, local youth Sahadev Chetry has been commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, becoming the first from his village to earn such a distinguished rank.
The son of Deo Bahadur Chetry and Lakshmi Chetry of Netaji Line, Bargolai, Sahadev was formally inducted into the officer cadre during the Indian Military Academy’s prestigious Passing Out Parade in Dehradun on June 14. His commissioning marks not just a personal milestone, but a proud chapter for the entire Margherita region.
A former student of Vivekananda Kendriya Vidyalaya (NEC), Bargolai, Sahadev’s journey has been defined by resilience and hard work. He joined the Army as a soldier in 2017 and later set his sights on becoming an officer. It took him three attempts to crack the highly competitive SSB interview — a challenge he met with unwavering determination.
Sahadev’s return to his village was met with jubilation. Greeted with traditional phoolam gamoshas, cheers, and celebrations, the newly commissioned officer was hailed as a symbol of hope and aspiration. Locals and well-wishers lauded his achievement as a beacon for the youth of Assam’s coal belt.
Speaking to the media, Sahadev said, “Since childhood, I had one aim — to wear the uniform and serve the nation. Today, I feel proud and grateful.” His success has already begun to inspire others in the community, proving that even from the most remote corners of the country, dreams can take flight with courage and conviction.
