Guwahati: A significant quantity of misused government-supplied rice has been seized from two godowns in Goalpara’s Balbala area, prompting a wider investigation into public distribution malpractice. Authorities recovered 420 sacks, approximately 210 quintals, of free rice meant for beneficiaries under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The premises were operated by co-operative agent Aliul Rahman, who was found to be in possession of an excessive amount of rice just a day ahead of the June 20 distribution deadline. According to official guidelines, PDS agents are allowed to retain a maximum of five quintals on the final day to serve any last-minute claimants. However, Rahman was caught with an excess of 205 quintals, raising serious concerns about diversion and possible black-market resale.
Sources allege that the accused had been illegally collecting beneficiary ration cards in exchange for cash, depriving rightful recipients of their essential entitlements. Such practices not only violate PDS norms but also jeopardise the core aim of ensuring food security for vulnerable populations.
Police have detained Rahman, and an interrogation is currently underway. The seizure has sparked widespread outrage among locals, who are demanding strict legal action and a comprehensive audit of all PDS agents in the region. The authorities are working to uncover the full extent of the malpractice and take necessary action to prevent such incidents in the future.
The incident has raised concerns about the effectiveness of the PDS and the need for stricter oversight to prevent such malpractice. The public is demanding accountability and transparency in the distribution of essential commodities, and the authorities are under pressure to take swift and decisive action.
