Meghalaya: Gang Rape Convicts in East Khasi Hills Get 20-Year Rigorous Imprisonment

Shillong, June 20, 2025 – A fast-track verdict from the court of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), DR Kharbteng, has brought justice in a harrowing 2022 gang rape case in East Khasi Hills. Three men, Marwello Lawai, Elipsing Lawai, and Rakesh Marboh, were handed down a 20-year rigorous imprisonment sentence on June 2, 2025, for their heinous crime.

The trio faced serious charges under Section 376D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for gang rape, along with Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 343 (wrongful confinement). The case, initially registered at Mawrynkneng police station, saw diligent investigation by Woman Police Sub-Inspector KD Sangma, who is now serving with the Directorate of Infiltration.

In addition to the two-decade rigorous imprisonment for the gang rape conviction, the court also slapped a fine of ₹1 lakh on each of the convicts. Should they fail to pay this amount, they will face an additional two months of simple imprisonment. For the lesser charges of voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful confinement, the court awarded one year of simple imprisonment, ensuring a comprehensive judgment for their crimes.
