India Urges Restraint Amid Escalating Tensions in Middle East
International: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial 45-minute telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, stressing the urgent need for restraint and renewed diplomatic engagement in the wake of recent US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. The call was initiated by President Pezeshkian, who briefed PM Modi on the ground situation following the strikes on key nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.
During the conversation, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the rising hostilities and reiterated India’s call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy as the way forward. He emphasized the need for early restoration of regional peace, security, and stability. “We discussed in detail the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability,” PM Modi posted on social media platform X.
India’s statement aligns with its long-standing foreign policy doctrine centered on non-violence, respect for sovereignty, and adherence to international law. President Pezeshkian lauded India as a “trusted friend and partner” and praised New Delhi’s balanced stance in international affairs, highlighting India’s vital role in restoring peace and stability in the region.
The US airstrikes, described by President Donald Trump as a “spectacular success,” have sparked global concern over regional stability and the broader implications for international peace and security. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned the US offensive, terming it a blatant breach of international law and a violation of the UN Charter and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The diplomatic outreach from Tehran comes at a time when the region stands on the brink of a potential wider conflict. The conversation between PM Modi and President Pezeshkian underscores India’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region while strengthening its bilateral ties with Iran.
