Entertainment: In a heartwarming move just two days after his official discharge from military service, BTS’s SUGA, known to millions as Min Yoongi, has inaugurated a significant philanthropic venture – the Min Yoongi Treatment Center for children grappling with autism spectrum disorder. The groundbreaking ceremony for the facility was held today, June 23, marking a new dawn in specialised autism care in South Korea.
Reports confirm that SUGA made a colossal donation of 5 billion Korean Won (approximately ₹30 crores) to Seoul’s Severance Hospital, setting a new record for the largest individual artist donation ever received by the esteemed institution. This generous contribution underscores his profound commitment to the cause.
The newly conceived treatment centre is poised to provide mid- to long-term care for children and adolescents with autism, with a unique emphasis on tailored therapy programmes centred around music-based interaction. SUGA’s deep involvement in this project began late last year, following meaningful conversations with Professor Chun Geun-ah from Severance Hospital’s Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
It is understood that discussions with Professor Chun brought to light the critical need for individualised autism treatment in Korea. What followed was not just a financial pledge but a hands-on commitment from SUGA, who delved into volunteer work, extensive research, and the intricate development of the programmes. Between March and June, his weekends were dedicated to participating in music therapy sessions, teaching instruments, and engaging in group exercises with the children.
A significant outcome of these dedicated sessions is the conceptualisation of the MIND program – Music Interaction Network and Diversity. This innovative programme encourages children to compose and perform music, serving as a powerful tool for emotional expression and the development of crucial social skills. Hospital staff have reportedly observed remarkable improvements in communication and group interaction among the children participating in these sessions.
The Min Yoongi Treatment Center aims to further expand this unique approach. Future plans include comprehensive training for therapists in music-based methodologies, the publication of vital clinical research, and the development of detailed manuals to guide subsequent programmes. The centre is also slated to introduce music therapy services for a wider spectrum of developmental conditions.
Construction of the centre is expected to conclude by September. Upon completion, the facility will not only serve as a hub for therapy but also for education and awareness, with a long-term vision of facilitating the greater integration of children with autism into society, with music acting as the crucial bridge. Reports from Severance Hospital staff commend SUGA’s unwavering presence and genuine engagement with the children throughout the entire project, highlighting his involvement as far exceeding mere financial backing.
