Sivasagar Submerged: Torrential Rains Expose Deep Flaws in Drainage System

Guwahati: A fierce, short burst of heavy rain on Sunday night has thrown life in Sivasagar town and its surrounding areas into complete chaos, leaving vast stretches underwater. More than half of the town’s 14 municipal wards are now submerged, leaving residents battling a full-blown artificial flood.

Key intersections at the very heart of Sivasagar, including Daulmukh Chariali and Mukti Nath Chariali, are currently impassable, bringing vehicular traffic and daily commutes to a grinding halt. Local businesses and homes are also severely impacted, with stagnant water pooling in numerous low-lying pockets.

Exasperated residents are pointing fingers squarely at the poor drainage infrastructure and what they call administrative indifference. They assert that this artificial flood is a man-made catastrophe, directly resulting from blocked drainage systems and a complete absence of timely pre-monsoon maintenance.

Local civic bodies, especially the Sivasagar Municipal Board, are facing sharp criticism for their alleged failure to desilt drains during the dry season. Locals argue that the municipality’s inaction has transformed what should be a predictable monsoon into a serious hazard for urban living.

“This isn’t a natural calamity – it’s a governance failure,” fumed one distraught resident, perfectly capturing the widespread sentiment among many who are now demanding immediate corrective actions and comprehensive long-term infrastructure planning.
