Guwahati Cops Bust Interstate ‘Trichy Gang’ Behind Car Break-ins

Guwahati: In a significant crackdown, Guwahati Police have apprehended five members of an inter-state criminal gang, bringing an end to a series of frustrating vehicle break-in cases that had been plaguing the city.

The breakthrough came hot on the heels of a complaint lodged by Dr. Banani Das. Her car, parked near the AG Bus Stop on Beltola Road, was vandalised in broad daylight around 3:15 PM, with thieves smashing a window and making off with her handbag containing important documents and a substantial Rs 30,000 in cash.

Noting the striking similarities to previous incidents, the police launched a comprehensive investigation. Their efforts, a meticulous blend of CCTV footage analysis and technical surveillance, led them to the Kamakhya and Maligaon Gosala areas, where they successfully cornered five suspects identified as key members of what the authorities are now calling the “Trichy Gang.”

Among those arrested is the alleged mastermind, 57-year-old Shankar Naydu from Tiruchirapalli. His younger accomplices have been identified as Bishal Naydu (22), Kadirvel Aramogam Nayadu (20), Karti Aramogam Nayadu (24), and Vacates Maranna Naydu (38). The arrested individuals hail from various parts of India, including Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, highlighting the gang’s far-reaching network.

The arrests yielded crucial evidence: a black backpack containing a rubber slingshot equipped with 11 bearing balls – the very tools used to shatter car windows. Police also recovered multiple stolen purses containing Rs 1,910 in cash, along with personal documents belonging to the accused, further solidifying the case against them.

During interrogation, the gang members reportedly confessed to their modus operandi, revealing their systematic approach to targeting parked vehicles. They employed specialised tools to swiftly break windows and pilfer valuables before making a quick getaway. Their confessions also shed light on their connections to a larger criminal network operating not just within Guwahati but across other states as well, indicating a significant dismantling of organised crime.
