Meghalaya Police Nab Four Within 24 Hours of Robbery, Recover Cash and iPhone Stolen from Mumbai Tourists
Shillong: In a swift and commendable response, police in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills arrested four suspects within a day of a robbery targeting a group of tourists from Mumbai, recovering all stolen items including ₹50,000 in cash and an iPhone 13.
The incident took place on the evening of June 22 around 8:00 PM, when Jay Nand Kishore Joshi, his family, and a newlywed couple from Mumbai parked their Toyota Innova near the Mahindra Showroom in Mawblei and proceeded to dine at the nearby restaurant, By the Way. Upon returning, the group discovered that the window of their vehicle had been broken and their luggage looted.
The tourists promptly filed a complaint at the Madanrting Police Station, reporting the theft of valuables including cash and the smartphone. Responding with urgency, the Madanrting Special Party launched a focused investigation and by the evening of June 23, conducted targeted raids in Mawblei Block B.
The operation led to the arrest of four individuals: Chaphrang Nangkiew Sutnga (24) of Mawblei, Wanjop Kharumnuid (23) of Laitkor Nonglum, Albertstar Kharhujon (22) of Umphyrnai, and Michael Nongrum (45) of Demthring Block A. All stolen items were recovered in full.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the arrests and lauded the team for its quick action. The successful resolution of the case within 24 hours not only brought relief to the victims but also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to tourist safety and effective law enforcement in the state.
