Meghalaya Set to Erect India’s Longest Cantilever Skywalk in Mawkdok
Mawkdok, East Khasi Hills – Meghalaya is gearing up for a significant boost to its tourism infrastructure with the impending construction of a Rs 51.7 crore skywalk in Mawkdok. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, during his “CM Connect” programme visit to the picturesque locale on Monday, confirmed that the tendering process has concluded and work is slated to commence right after the monsoon season. This ambitious project aims to redefine the region’s tourist appeal.
The proposed skywalk, designed to offer breathtaking panoramic views, will boast a 40-metre-long walkway. A highlight of the structure will be its 7-metre-wide cantilever section, extending dramatically over the valley, poised to be one of India’s longest. Chief Minister Sangma expressed his optimism, stating that the project “will change the face of tourism in the area and create new opportunities for the local economy,” during his interaction with the villagers.
Mawkdok, already a popular stopover for tourists heading to Cherrapunji along the Sohra circuit, is expected to see a significant surge in visitor footfall and prolonged stays once the skywalk is operational. The initiative, first unveiled at the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival in November 2023 with the foundation stone laid by CM Sangma and Union DONER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, underscores the state’s strategic focus on tourism development. At the time, Sangma had emphasised, “Tourism is a very important part of our overall strategy for the region. We are hopeful that the DoNER Ministry would continue to support the region to promote tourism.”
