Assam: Scandal Brews Over Substandard Drain Work in Margherita
Margherita: A major controversy has erupted in Margherita town concerning the ongoing drain construction projects, with the influential Asom Jatiyotabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) alleging widespread irregularities and the use of inferior materials. The youth-student body has pointed fingers directly at the implementing contractor, claiming a blatant disregard for quality under a significant centrally funded scheme.
According to a press statement released by the AJYCP’s Tinsukia District Committee, the ambitious drain construction across Margherita’s ten municipal wards, initiated way back in 2016-17 under the Central Government’s Non-Lapsable Central Pool of Resources (NLCPR) scheme, has become a hotbed of suspected corruption and negligence. The project, reportedly valued at an estimated Rs 20 crore, was formally awarded to contractor B.N. Shah following a tender process.
Kanchan Bora, Vice President of the AJYCP’s Tinsukia unit, minced no words while addressing the media. He sternly alleged that the contractor is consistently utilising poor-quality construction materials, a practice that, he warned, would inevitably lead to the premature damage or even complete collapse of the newly built drainage system within a year of its completion.
“The government collects taxes from the struggling masses with the promise of development. But if just a few contractors compromise on quality and the infrastructure collapses in days, who is held accountable?” a visibly agitated Bora questioned, highlighting the dire implications for public funds and infrastructure.
Bora further expressed his profound disappointment with the local administration, criticising the lack of serious oversight or intervention from the local MLA, the Margherita Co-District Administration, or the Margherita Municipal Board, despite the glaring issues being brought to light.
The AJYCP has now issued a stern call to action, demanding immediate intervention from both the local legislator and the district administration. The organisation has urged them to launch a thorough investigation into the matter and initiate strict legal proceedings against the erring contractor. The AJYCP has also cautioned that if their legitimate concerns are brushed aside, they will have no option but to launch a vigorous protest movement to ensure justice and accountability prevail.
