Assam Governor Offers Prayers at Kamakhya Temple as Ambubachi Mela Concludes

Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, accompanied by his wife, offered prayers at the Kamakhya Temple on Thursday morning as the revered shrine reopened for public darshan following the conclusion of the Ambubachi Mela. The Governor joined thousands of devotees who had gathered atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati for the first glimpse of the goddess after the temple’s ritual closure during the sacred annual observance.

The reopening marks the end of Nivriti, the symbolic period of menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya, during which the temple doors remain closed. Speaking to the media after his visit, Governor Acharya said, “I prayed for the realization of Viksit Bharat and for strength to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his mission to advance India’s development. The arrangements at the temple have been well-organized to ensure smooth darshan for devotees.”

The Ambubachi Mela, one of the most spiritually significant festivals in eastern India, honours the divine feminine energy embodied by Goddess Kamakhya. The temple was closed on June 22 after the Prabritti rituals and reopened on June 26 to mark the end of the goddess’s retreat. The four-day event, observed in the Assamese month of Ahaar, draws lakhs of pilgrims from across India and beyond, transforming the ancient temple complex into a hub of devotion, mysticism, and cultural celebration.

Recognised as a centre of Tantric worship, the Kamakhya Temple is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, making it a pivotal site in the spiritual geography of India. This year’s festival saw a seamless blend of tradition and faith, as devotees, saints, and seekers gathered in reverence to participate in the age-old rituals that continue to define the cultural fabric of Assam.
