Mizoram CM Stresses Urgent Infrastructure Push to Unlock Northeast’s Economic Potential

Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has called for immediate and focused efforts to strengthen infrastructure across the Northeast, arguing that better connectivity would not only enhance regional integration but also significantly boost cross-border trade with Southeast Asian nations.

Speaking during a virtual meeting of the High-Level Task Force on the North East Economic Corridor — a strategic initiative by the Ministry of DoNER aimed at accelerating economic growth in the region — Lalduhoma outlined the pressing infrastructural challenges, particularly in Mizoram. He highlighted the state’s alarmingly low road density compared to the national average, noting that the shortfall continues to impede development and investment.

“Several core infrastructure sectors in Mizoram need urgent attention,” the Chief Minister stated, stressing that targeted upgrades could unlock substantial economic opportunities and improve livelihoods across the region.

Lalduhoma also underscored the strategic importance of the Northeast as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. He said enhanced physical connectivity would facilitate smoother cross-border trade, boost local industries, and generate employment for youth across the region.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia for his continued leadership and commitment to advancing the Northeast’s developmental priorities.

The high-level meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Assam Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Manipur Chief Secretary P.K. Singh, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Secretary V. Umashankar, and other senior officials. The discussions focused on coordinated strategies to close infrastructure gaps and leverage the region’s unique geostrategic position for long-term economic growth.
