Historic Bhologuri Tea Estate Submerged as Floods Wreak Havoc in Assam
Guwahati: Relentless rainfall has unleashed severe flooding across parts of Assam, with the historic Bhologuri Tea Estate among the worst-hit regions. Swollen by continuous downpours, the Balijan River and its tributaries breached a key embankment, sending floodwaters surging into surrounding villages and plantations.
The Bhologuri Tea Estate, renowned for its heritage and deep-rooted legacy in Assam’s tea industry, is now almost entirely submerged. Water has inundated residential quarters and tea workers’ settlements, plunging the area into chaos and displacing scores of families. Panic spread across the estate as residents scrambled to salvage belongings and secure safer ground.
The humanitarian impact is most acute among tea garden workers, whose fragile living conditions have further deteriorated amid rising waters and growing uncertainty. The internal Garh Captain Path—a vital lifeline for transportation and operations within the estate—is fully submerged, cutting off access to essential supplies and emergency services.
Local leaders and community members have raised urgent calls for relief and rehabilitation measures, urging the district administration to act swiftly. With communication and mobility severely hampered, affected families are in dire need of rescue efforts, temporary shelter, medical aid, and food supplies.
Authorities are expected to assess the damage and mobilize emergency assistance as the situation continues to evolve under persistent rainfall. The incident underscores the vulnerability of Assam’s tea belt to climate-induced disasters and the urgent need for robust flood mitigation infrastructure.
