Assam: Barpeta Celebrates 43rd District Day with Cultural Pride and Civic Engagement

Guwahati: Barpeta district marked its 43rd District Day on Tuesday with a vibrant blend of official ceremonies, cultural showcases, and community participation. Organized by the district administration, the day-long celebration highlighted the region’s socio-political journey and cultural richness since its declaration as a separate district on July 1, 1983.

The commemorations began with a solemn tribute to the founder of Barpeta, followed by a tree plantation drive, symbolizing the district’s commitment to sustainability and collective growth. A seminar held at 4:00 PM brought together distinguished citizens from various fields to deliberate on Barpeta’s development trajectory, with special focus on its social and political evolution. Noted litterateur Akshay Kumar Misra presented thoughtful recommendations aimed at strengthening the district’s cultural and social fabric.

Cultural organisations and social groups actively took part in programs hosted at the District Library, showcasing the region’s artistic and communal spirit. In a heartwarming gesture, residents across Barpeta lit lamps in the evening to honor the district’s legacy, while government offices were adorned with decorative lighting to mark the occasion.

The day concluded with a powerful stage performance of the play ‘Satta’ by Assam Natya Sanmilan’s Dakshin Barpeta Branch. Directed by acclaimed theatre personality Satyen Das, the performance drew an enthusiastic audience and served as a fitting finale to the celebratory day.

District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha, IAS, led the celebrations and emphasized the importance of community contribution in building a progressive and harmonious Barpeta. He also recognized several individuals from key departments—including police, education, and social welfare—for their outstanding public service.

Since its formation in 1983, Barpeta has observed District Day annually, using the occasion to reflect on its heritage and reaffirm its vision for inclusive development.
