Assam: Seven Arrested in Margherita for Alleged Illegal Beef Trade Following CM’s Crackdown Order
Guwahati: Acting on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s directive to intensify action against illegal beef trade, Margherita Police conducted a late-night raid on Monday in the Masjid Patti area, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals, including a woman.
The operation, led by Officer-in-Charge Protap Gogoi of Margherita Police Station, culminated in the seizure of a consignment of illegally sourced beef. The arrested individuals were detained at the scene, and a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law. The police are expected to produce the accused before a judicial magistrate soon.
While the names of the suspects have not been officially disclosed, preliminary investigations suggest they were allegedly involved in the illegal trade for a considerable period.
The crackdown is part of a wider state-level campaign to enforce laws prohibiting unlawful slaughter, transportation, and sale of beef. The Chief Minister’s directive has triggered a series of enforcement operations across Assam in recent weeks.
Following the arrests, tensions briefly rose as a group of people gathered near Margherita Police Station demanding the release of the detainees. However, the police maintained calm and reiterated that the legal process would be followed strictly.
Right-wing organisations in the area welcomed the police action, hailing it as a step towards upholding the law and curbing illegal activities.
Authorities have increased surveillance in sensitive areas to prevent any escalation, and the situation remains under control.
