Assam Gearing Up for Major Eviction Drive Along Nagaland Border

Guwahati: The Assam government is all set to initiate another significant eviction drive, this time focusing on clearing encroachments along the Bokajan-Lahorijan stretch of National Highway 39 (NH-39) within the Bokajan Revenue Circle in Karbi Anglong district. The move follows persistent reports of illegal settlements mushrooming along the crucial highway that connects Dimapur to Golaghat.

This upcoming operation marks the second major push against encroachment in the region, hot on the heels of a previous drive at Dudu Colony. Authorities have underlined a firm, no-holds-barred approach to tackle both illegal settlements and any associated criminal activities.

Dr. Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, minced no words during his recent visit to the site, unequivocally stating the government’s resolve. “Not a single inch of land will be given to doubtful outsiders. The houses of drug peddlers will be demolished immediately,” he asserted, reflecting the state’s broader anti-encroachment strategy championed by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. This policy has already seen at least one eviction drive conducted in every district across Assam, aimed at curbing unauthorised occupation of government and public land.

Beyond the issue of illegal occupation, Dr. Momin also drew attention to severe waterlogging near the Assam-Nagaland border, which has significantly damaged vital road infrastructure. He promptly directed the Chief Engineer of Assam, along with officials from the Bokajan and Barpathar divisions, to commence immediate repair and drainage work.

Dr. Momin further assured that all encroached areas along All Lahorijan NH-39 and other government properties would be systematically cleared in the coming days.

During his site visit, Dr. Momin was accompanied by nominated MAC Mukut Mahanta, Kakumoni Saikia (SDO-Civil, Bokajan), and law enforcement officials, who collectively assessed the ground situation. The forthcoming eviction drive is poised to re-emphasise the government’s stringent stance against unlawful land occupation and is expected to bolster crucial infrastructure development along this sensitive inter-state corridor.
