Tripura’s Kharchi Mela Embraces Green Future & Digital Vigilance
Khayerpur, Tripura: The spiritual fervour of Tripura’s second-largest annual gathering, the Kharchi Mela, commenced on Thursday in Khayerpur, ushering in a week-long celebration that blends ancient traditions with a forward-looking commitment to environmental stewardship and digital security. The festival, anticipated to draw over 20 lakh visitors, notably inaugurated two pivotal initiatives alongside its customary religious and cultural observances.
Chief Minister Manik Saha officially inaugurated the mela amidst heightened security arrangements and meticulous preparations. This year’s festivities, dedicated to the 14 revered deities, the Chaturdasha Devata, are attracting not only devotees from across the state but also international participants, including monks from Nepal and Bhutan, underscoring the festival’s burgeoning regional appeal and spiritual significance.
In a significant stride towards the state’s environmental objectives, a state-of-the-art Plastic Waste Segregation Centre was unveiled at the festival grounds. This facility is poised to significantly mitigate plastic pollution within and around the venue, simultaneously generating local employment opportunities and fostering public awareness regarding responsible waste management. Officials have highlighted this initiative as an integral component of a wider strategy to integrate eco-friendly infrastructure throughout urban and rural Tripura.
Security and public service provisions have been considerably augmented for the duration of the event. Dedicated medical units, swift emergency response teams, and enhanced crowd management protocols are meticulously in place to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.
Adding another crucial dimension to the week’s developments, Tripura also witnessed the inauguration of its inaugural Cyber Crime Police Station on Saturday. This specialised unit is expected to substantially fortify the state’s online safety framework, signalling a new chapter in its policing capabilities, particularly in combating contemporary digital threats.
As Khayerpur transforms into a vibrant hub of culture and commerce, the fair offers a rich tapestry of traditional cuisine, captivating tribal performances, intricate artisan stalls, and informative public exhibitions. The Kharchi Mela is slated to continue throughout the week, culminating in elaborate rituals and a grand showcase of Tripura’s diverse cultural legacy.
