Meghalaya Police Warn Public of Rising Online Investment Scams Masquerading as Legitimate Job Offers
Shillong — Meghalaya Police have issued an urgent public advisory following a surge in sophisticated digital investment scams that have defrauded victims under the guise of employment opportunities and high-return schemes.
Operating under names such as “Look Online Job,” “LOOK COMPANY,” “LOOK,” and “Look Culture Media Ltd,” the fraudulent operations have been linked to numerous reports of financial exploitation. Authorities confirm that victims have lost substantial amounts of money after being drawn into carefully staged online interactions.
According to cybercrime officials, the scam follows a textbook pump-and-dump pattern. Victims are first approached with what appears to be a legitimate job offer or task-based online employment. As trust builds, they are gradually introduced to investment opportunities that promise guaranteed returns — offers that are unrealistic and clearly too good to be true.
Once funds are transferred, victims are blocked from withdrawing any purported profits and are subjected to further pressure to make additional payments under various pretexts. Some report being coerced into bringing in more participants through referral incentives — a tactic often associated with pyramid or Ponzi-style schemes.
The police have stressed that these so-called companies provide no transparency regarding their registration status, operations, or physical addresses, further reinforcing the illegitimacy of their claims.
In a statement, the Meghalaya Police urged the public to immediately terminate any communication with these entities and refrain from sharing personal or financial information. Victims are encouraged to report such incidents at the nearest Cyber Crime Police Station or via official government channels.
How to Report:
• National Cybercrime Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in
• National Helpline: 1930
• Meghalaya Cybercrime Helpline: 9402519391
Authorities reiterated that swift reporting can help prevent the expansion of such scams and contribute to larger investigations aimed at dismantling these fraud networks. The public is also encouraged to warn family, friends, and colleagues, especially those active on social media or job-seeking platforms, to remain vigilant against digital financial fraud.
