Assam: Beef Smuggling Attempt Foiled in Dhubri, One held with 30 Kg of Meat
Dhubri, Assam — In a targeted crackdown on illegal meat transportation, Assam Police on Friday morning apprehended a suspected beef smuggler and seized 30 kilograms of raw beef near the under-construction National Highway 127B in Dhubri district.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, personnel from Balajan Police Station under Gauripur Police jurisdiction intercepted a scooty bearing West Bengal registration number WB-63D-0084. The rider, identified as Nazmal Miah, son of Syed Ali Miah and a resident of Toofanganj, West Bengal, attempted to flee when signalled to stop but was captured after a brief chase.
Upon searching the vehicle, police recovered 30 kg of raw beef, which was promptly seized. The accused is currently in custody, and formal legal proceedings are underway.
According to police sources, the incident is part of a widening trend of beef smuggling across the Assam–West Bengal border. Smugglers are believed to exploit remote entry points and non-Assam registered vehicles to bypass local enforcement and evade detection.
Speaking on the operation, Officer-in-Charge Uttam Roy confirmed that a case has been registered and further investigation is ongoing to uncover the larger smuggling network possibly involved in cross-border illegal meat transport.
The arrest comes amid heightened statewide efforts to curb illegal cattle and beef trade, especially in sensitive border zones, following repeated directives from the state government for strict enforcement.
