Assam: KAAC Gears Up for Mining Review Meeting, Emphasizes Sustainable Resource Management

Diphu, Karbi Anglong — In a significant step toward strengthening governance and environmental regulation, the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) convened a high-level preparatory meeting on Thursday evening at the CEM Block of the KAAC Secretariat.

The meeting, chaired by Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, comes ahead of a critical review scheduled for July 7 to assess mining activities in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts.

Present at the session were Executive Members Tiluttoma Hasnu and Prabhat Chandra Taro, Principal Secretary Mukul Kumar Saikia (IAS), senior-most Secretary Si-im Taro, department secretaries, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests cum Head of the Council, and senior officials from departments overseeing mining, forest, and environmental management.

Key agenda items included:
• Compilation and analysis of updated mining data
• Review of regulatory enforcement mechanisms
• Refinement of inter-departmental coordination strategies
• Promotion of sustainable and transparent mining practices

CEM Ronghang underscored the Council’s unwavering commitment to lawful, eco-friendly, and community-oriented resource management. He stressed the importance of balancing economic development with environmental sustainability and the well-being of indigenous communities.

The upcoming July 7 review is expected to lay the groundwork for long-term reforms in the mining sector and introduce more robust oversight measures across the two hill districts.
