Manipur Police Mount Statewide Crackdown: Militant Nabbed, Stolen Vehicles Recovered, Arms Seized

Imphal: Manipur Police executed a comprehensive series of operations across multiple districts on July 4, delivering significant blows to insurgent activities, vehicle theft rings, and traffic violators. The coordinated efforts led to key arrests, substantial recoveries of illicit arms and ammunition, and the seizure of several stolen vehicles.

A major breakthrough came with the arrest of Heisnam Romeo Singh, a 38-year-old active cadre of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF – P). Singh, hailing from Laphupat Tera Hiyang Khong, was apprehended from Moirangkhom within Imphal Police Station limits, Imphal West district. Police sources indicate Singh was allegedly involved in extortion targeting various offices and private establishments across the greater Imphal area. Officers recovered a wallet, a mobile phone, and ₹22,500 in cash from his possession.

Further, a separate intelligence-led operation in the Chanbirok hill area, under Sekmai Police Station in Imphal West, yielded a cache of dangerous weaponry. Recoveries included a modified bolt action rifle, a 9mm carbine submachine gun with a magazine, a No. 36 high-explosive hand grenade (minus its detonator), a helmet, three magazines of an unspecified rifle, four rounds of 5.56mm INSAS ammunition, and four improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

In Thoubal district, police successfully recovered four vehicles that had been reported stolen. The vehicles—a white Mahindra Bolero, a blue Maruti Suzuki Fronx, a silver Maruti Suzuki Swift, and a black TATA Xenon—were located at Lilong Turel Ahanbi under Lilong Police Station. While the rightful owners of three vehicles have been identified and the handover process initiated, the identity of the TATA Xenon’s owner remains elusive.

Separately, in Chakmual village and surrounding areas under Churachandpur Police Station, authorities seized a variety of arms and ammunition. These included a single-barrel locally made rifle with a magazine, five live bolt cartridges, two 7.62mm live rounds, and eight tear smoke munitions.

In a continued drive to ensure road safety and compliance, Manipur Police issued 59 challans to traffic violators on July 4, accumulating a total fine of ₹94,500. Additionally, a day prior, a special vehicle drive saw tinted films removed from 21 vehicles, reinforcing adherence to existing regulations.
