Floods Wreak Havoc in Nagaland, Three Dead in Dimapur Electrocutions

Kohima: Heavy monsoon downpours have unleashed widespread devastation across Nagaland over the past few days, claiming at least three lives, including a woman, due to electrocution in flood-hit Dimapur. The victims met their tragic end within their homes in the Burma Camp and Kuda Village areas, regions now submerged under chest-deep floodwaters, forcing residents to wade through treacherous conditions.

The unrelenting deluge brought Dimapur Airport to a complete standstill on Sunday, as floodwaters inundated the runway and parking areas, leading to the cancellation of multiple flights, including those operated by IndiGo and Air India Express. Passengers have been advised to directly contact their respective airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules. Adding to the state’s woes, National Highway 29, vital for connecting Dimapur and Kohima, has been severely impacted by landslides, disrupting vehicular movement and posing significant risks to commuters.

Dimapur, Kohima, and Niuland stand out as the districts bearing the brunt of the floods. In Niuland alone, an alarming estimate of 70 villages has been reported as affected, with extensive damage to critical infrastructure such as bridges, homes, fisheries, and paddy fields, sparking concerns over potential food security issues. In Dimapur’s Half-Nagarjan area, floodwaters have risen to a staggering three feet, transforming streets into waterways navigable only by boats or, for some, by swimming. Authorities have so far managed to rescue 52 individuals from these inundated zones as part of ongoing evacuation efforts.

Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Dr. Tinojongshi Chang provided a glimmer of hope, stating that the absence of fresh rainfall since last night has resulted in a gradual decrease in water levels. However, he cautioned that officials remain on high alert given the India Meteorological Department’s forecast of more rain. The District Disaster Management Authority is presently convening a coordination meeting to meticulously assess the full extent of the damage and to strategise for further action, anticipating continued heavy rainfall throughout the week. Authorities have issued an urgent appeal to residents, urging them to steer clear of flood-prone areas and to remain vigilant as the state maintains a heightened state of alert.
