Illegal Immigration: Tipra Motha MLA Warns of Intensified Protests in Tripura
Agartala: Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma today issued a stern warning to both the Tripura and central governments, vowing to escalate protests if immediate action is not taken against the burgeoning issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh.
Addressing a massive rally in Agartala, Debbarma underscored the critical need for the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) directives to be implemented in Tripura with the same rigour observed in other states across the nation.
“This is a non-political protest, and we are protesting while carrying national flags, as the issue is both a burning and national one,” Debbarma declared to a vast assembly gathered before the Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan. The rally saw enthusiastic participation from diverse communities, united by a singular demand: the identification and subsequent deportation of illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya immigrants residing within the state’s borders. Organisers emphatically highlighted the non-partisan spirit of the event, framing it as a collective plea for national security and the safeguarding of community rights.
Drawing parallels with decisive actions taken in states like Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, New Delhi, Haryana, and Tamil Nadu, Debbarma urged the Tripura government to follow suit without any further procrastination. “Or else, we will stage a massive protest in the coming days. We will not back down,” he cautioned, signaling a resolute stance. He also harked back to his own efforts in 1997, recalling how he had raised the very same issue of illegal immigration from Bangladesh at the United Nations in Switzerland. “I have been fighting and will continue to fight against illegal immigrants and push them back to Bangladesh,” Debbarma asserted, reiterating his long-standing commitment to the cause.
Quoting Tipra Motha founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, he invoked the guiding principle, “Community first, then party.” Through this mantra, he passionately appealed to the populace to transcend political divides and unite to protect their ancestral lands and future generations. “Our main demand is that those who have come from Bangladesh and are living here by snatching our rights, lands, and future must be identified and pushed back to protect the future generations,” Debbarma stressed. He further emphasised the grave implications, stating, “These illegal immigrants are a threat to the security and sovereignty of the country.” Debbarma unequivocally clarified that the movement’s objective is not aimed at any specific community but is strictly focused on addressing illegal immigration through the lawful enforcement of existing policies.
