Tripura’s June Monsoon: A Near-Normal Affair with Localised Extremes
Agartala – Tripura experienced a largely typical monsoon in June this year, with rainfall figures aligning closely with the seasonal average, according to a recent statement from the Meteorological Centre, Agartala. The state recorded a total of 401.0 mm of rain, a mere 6 per cent shy of the normal average of 425.9 mm, signalling a stable yet slightly varied monsoonal period.
Throughout June, Tripura witnessed 25 days of rain, with the monsoon’s intensity fluctuating across different periods. The conditions were categorised as active on 5 days, normal on 13 days, and weak on 12 days, showcasing a balanced yet dynamic rainfall pattern across the month.
Compared to the previous year, June 2024 saw 371.7 mm of precipitation, indicating a marginal increase in rainfall this year. Among the state’s districts, South Tripura emerged as the wettest, recording a substantial 596.7 mm of rainfall, a positive departure of 23% from its normal. Within this district, Sabroom station alone registered a significant 729.8 mm, marking it as the highest rainfall recorded at any single location.
However, the month was not without its extremes in localised events. Nutanbazar in North Tripura district experienced a torrential downpour on June 1, reporting the highest 24-hour rainfall of the month with a staggering 296.2 mm. Conversely, Sepahijala district faced the lowest rainfall, registering a deficit of 43% compared to its usual figures.
Temperature-wise, June saw the maximum temperature touch 36.4°C on the 10th at Agartala Airport, while the average mean maximum temperature settled at 33.2°C, which is 0.5°C above normal. The lowest minimum temperature recorded was 23.0°C on June 3, with the average mean minimum temperature standing at 25.3°C, indicating a 1.0°C departure from the seasonal norm.
