Monsoon Mayhem Grips Karbi Anglong: Relief Operations Intensify Amidst Rising Waters
Diphu, Karbi Anglong: As relentless monsoon rains continue to lash Karbi Anglong, the district administration has swung into action, launching a comprehensive series of measures to bring succour to affected communities and brace for the ongoing challenges. From setting up relief camps to ensuring vital supplies, authorities are working round-the-clock to mitigate the impact of the floods.
The Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Bokajan confirmed the establishment of multiple relief camps across the subdivision, each under the vigilant eye of designated Camp In-charges, including school heads and Child-Friendly Space (CFS) in-charges like Anganwadi workers. These dedicated individuals are playing a pivotal role in ensuring that relief operations run efficiently and inclusively, reaching everyone in need. The Revenue Department is lending a crucial hand, meticulously recording daily data and facilitating the smooth distribution of *Gratuitous Relief (GR) materials, clean drinking water, electricity, sanitation facilities, baby food, and medical assistance. In a heartening move, Anganwadi workers have also been tasked with managing child-friendly spaces and providing specialised support to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women and lactating mothers. For immediate assistance, a *24×7 Control Room has been activated, accessible at 03675-291085.
Several villages, including Wards 4 and 5 of Dokmoka, Dingse Tokbi, Teke Rongpi, Kethe Rongpi, Panbari, Shivbari of Diphu, and Dupor Timung, have been significantly affected by the rising floodwaters. While these areas are yet to see relief camps established, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon: thankfully, no animal casualties have been reported, and the water level of the Horkathi River is gradually receding.
However, the situation remains precarious in West Karbi Anglong, which has been hit by *flash floods, particularly in areas like Telhor (Jengkha) and Baithalangso. The *Dhanisiri River is overflowing its banks, submerging roads connecting Nagakhuli and Deopani and severely impeding movement. Areas such as Kangdir Teron Gaon under Kohora Division and parts of Bokajan are also struggling with inundation. An elderly resident from Dokmoka, his voice heavy with distress, shared, “I have never witnessed a flood of such magnitude. The destruction to crops and homes has been devastating.” Authorities have identified the sudden opening of all 11 gates of the Dikrit Irrigation Dam at Haber Rongphar College as a significant factor in the escalating flood situation.
In a proactive measure to support livestock, fodder is being dispatched from Manja Fodder Farm to Bokajan and Silonijan. Furthermore, Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) packages are being distributed door-to-door at the Sam Taro Anganwadi Centre (AWC) to overcome access challenges posed by waterlogging and ensure food security for affected families. The District Administration has also issued clear directives to all relevant departments to conduct on-the-ground assessments and ensure the prompt delivery of essential services to those impacted. Authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to minimise the crisis through real-time interventions and targeted support, demonstrating a resolute front against the monsoon’s fury.
