National Highway 27 Blocked: Lifeblood of Southern Assam Severely Disrupted by Landslides

Guwahati: Traffic along the vital Haflong–Silchar stretch of National Highway-27 has ground to a complete halt, leaving thousands stranded and sparking widespread concern across Assam and beyond. Continuous rainfall in the Dima Hasao district has triggered multiple landslides, severely impacting the region’s primary connectivity lifeline.

The situation worsened considerably on Monday with a fresh landslide near the Lumding Bypass, adding to existing disruptions and trapping scores of heavy vehicles for days on end. This crucial artery, which also serves as National Highway-6 in parts, is the main link between Guwahati, Silchar, and Agartala. Its prolonged closure has thrown a wrench into the transport of essential goods and the movement of passengers to southern Assam and neighbouring states, raising alarms over supply chain stability and overall regional connectivity.

Truckers and transporters bound for the Barak Valley are now stuck on both sides of the damaged highway, facing an uncertain wait with no clear timeline for the resumption of traffic. The economic fallout is already palpable, particularly in the Dima Hasao and Barak Valley districts, which rely heavily on this route for trade and commerce. Authorities have issued advisories urging commuters to steer clear of the affected stretch. They have also indicated that comprehensive restoration efforts will only commence once the weather improves and the treacherous terrain is deemed safe for work.
