Security Forces Tighten Grip in Manipur with Multiple Arrests, Drug Busts and Arms Seizures
Imphal: Security operations in Manipur have ramped up significantly, with multiple arrests, seizures of drugs, illegal weapons, and crackdowns on vehicle-related offences reported across several districts. The intensified enforcement comes amid rising concerns over drug trafficking, insurgency-related activities, and stolen vehicle networks in the state.
On July 9, two 19-year-old men from Thoubal district—Ajmir Sarif and Iliyas Ali Shah—were arrested at the Mao Gate police check post in Senapati. They were caught trafficking 22 kilograms of ganja packed in 18 packets, valued at approximately ₹2.18 lakh. A white Winger van bearing Assam registration (AS 23CC-1074) used in transporting the contraband was also seized.
On the same day, a cadre of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), 38-year-old Shyamchand Singh of Senjam Khunou, was nabbed from the Lamphel Super Market area in Imphal West. Authorities said he was actively involved in extortion activities across Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.
In a separate joint operation by Manipur Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Tupul bridge, 196 soap cases containing suspected heroin or brown sugar, with a net weight of 2.193 kg (excluding packaging), were recovered from a four-wheeler. Two individuals—Ginminlen Haokip of Kangpokpi and Holminlen Khongsai of Chandel—were arrested, and investigations are currently ongoing.
Meanwhile, search operations targeting insurgent hideouts yielded significant arms and ammunition. In Bishnupur district, security personnel recovered a .303 light machine gun, two single-barrel guns, an empty .303 magazine, seven live 12-bore cartridges, and four improvised explosive devices (IEDs) weighing nearly 4 kg from an area between Dopkon and Nganukon villages.
Another major recovery was made in the Uyungmakhong area under Moirang Police Station, where an AK-56 rifle with an empty magazine, a .303 rifle, a double-barrel gun, ten .303 rounds, and ten 7.62 mm rounds were found hidden.
Efforts to curb vehicle-related crimes have also intensified. On July 9, police raided the residence of a suspected vehicle lifter, Md. Hefajuddin alias Boboy (27), at Santhel Awang Leikai under Mayang Imphal Police Station. Though he escaped, police recovered a stolen blue Honda Activa 6G (MN 06SF-9963), reported stolen from Imphal East on July 5. Authorities are in the process of returning the scooter to its rightful owner, and efforts are underway to apprehend Hefajuddin.
Enforcement against traffic violations continues as well. On July 9, police issued 14 challans for various offences, collecting a total of ₹10,000 in fines. The day before, tinted films were removed from 13 vehicles as part of a special drive to ensure road safety and legal compliance.
These coordinated actions across multiple fronts signal a renewed push by Manipur’s law enforcement agencies to restore order and disrupt criminal networks threatening the state’s stability.
