Manipur Steps Up Anti-Militancy Drive, Nabs Key Cadres

Imphal: Security forces across Manipur have intensified operations over the past two days, leading to significant arrests of active cadres from banned militant outfits and the seizure of arms and incriminating materials. The concerted efforts aim to curb insurgent activities and maintain peace in the region.

On July 10, a targeted joint operation in Phougakchao-Ikhai Awang Leikai, Bishnupur district, resulted in the apprehension of Sarangthem Gobin Meitei alias Maru (36), an active member of the proscribed PREPAK (PRO). A mobile phone with an Airtel SIM card was recovered from him.

The same day saw another success for Manipur Police, with the arrest of Mayanglambam Ranjit alias Premchand (44), an active cadre of KYKL (SOREPA), from Umathel Bazar in Kakching district.

Earlier, on July 9, security forces had already nabbed Maibam Basanta Meitei alias Boy (40), a self-styled Lance Corporal of KYKL (SOREPA), from Mayang Imphal Thana Mamang Leikai area in Imphal West district. Basanta Meitei, a resident of Wabagai Thambal Chingya in Kakching district, was reportedly involved in a range of illicit activities including extortion, issuing monetary demands, kidnapping, and recruiting new cadres for the banned outfit across Thoubal, Kakching, and Imphal West districts. From his possession, authorities seized a 9mm pistol with a magazine, four live rounds, two mobile phones, a SIM card, and crucial identification documents like an Aadhaar card, PAN card, and voter ID card.

Beyond the anti-insurgency efforts, Manipur Police also conducted a robust traffic enforcement drive on July 10, issuing 67 challans to violators and collecting a total fine of Rs 1,21,000. The preceding day, police had detained 20 two-wheelers for various infractions, including lack of registration documents and number plates. Additionally, tinted films were removed from nine vehicles in a separate drive.
