Guwahati Tea Auction Centre Brews Strong Performance with 27% Sales Surge
Guwahati, Assam – The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC) has reported a robust performance in the April–June quarter of 2025, witnessing a significant 27 per cent year-on-year increase in total tea sales. The volume surged to 32.21 million kg, a notable rise from 25.37 million kg sold during the corresponding period last year.
Dinesh Bihani, Secretary of the Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association, highlighted to ANI that CTC teas remained the dominant category, with sales climbing from 16.17 million kg in 2024 to 20.46 million kg in 2025. However, the average prices for CTC teas saw a slight dip of Rs 14.68 compared to the same quarter last year. Meanwhile, dust teas also showed healthy growth, with sales reaching 9.82 million kg, up from 8.25 million kg, and their average price improving to Rs 240.20 from Rs 225.30 in Q1 2024. Orthodox teas, on the other hand, displayed exceptional growth, doubling their sales from 0.94 million kg in 2024 to 1.92 million kg this quarter, accompanied by a significant price increase of Rs 16.14, averaging Rs 279.63.
Bihani further elaborated that this positive trend was significantly bolstered by increased participation from global export buyers. In terms of pricing tiers, 22 per cent of CTC leaf and 30 per cent of dust teas were auctioned above Rs 300 per kg. Another 38 per cent of CTC leaf and 29 per cent of dust teas fell within the Rs 200-299 bracket, while the remaining 40 per cent in both categories were sold between Rs 100-199. The growing proportion of teas fetching premium prices underscores strong market demand dynamics and a continued preference for quality lots within the market.
GTAC continues to be a crucial hub in India’s tea trade, providing a transparent and efficient platform for producers, buyers, and traders. With promising crop trends and sustained buyer interest, the centre anticipates handling even larger tea volumes in the coming months, solidifying its position as a key national and global tea trading hub.
