Pakistan Prioritises Player Safety Ahead of India Hockey Tournaments

Islamabad – With the Asia Cup and Junior World Cup looming later this year, Pakistan is taking a cautious approach to its national hockey team’s participation in tournaments hosted by India. A top government official has unequivocally stated that player safety will be paramount, and no team will be dispatched if security concerns persist.

Rana Mashood, the influential chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Development and Sports Program, emphasised that the green light for the national team’s travel to India hinges entirely on a comprehensive security review. “The government will review the security situation in India for Pakistani nationals and if it is not satisfied it will not put any of our players at risk by sending them to play in India,” Mashood, a former minister, asserted. He specifically referenced “India’s Operation Sindoor” as a factor contributing to perceived security risks for Pakistani nationals.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has already sought formal advice and permission from relevant ministries regarding sending their national teams for these two crucial events. The Asia Cup, scheduled for next month, holds added significance as a qualifier for the 2026 World Cup. Rana Mujahid, the secretary-general of the PHF, acknowledged Pakistan’s past participation in international events held in India. However, he stressed, “But as of now the situation is different, relations are strained so we can only move forward when the government gives us clearance.” Mujahid also revealed that the PHF is actively monitoring social media for any threats directed at the hockey team players, further highlighting the heightened security considerations.
