Assam Rifles Foils Massive Meth Smuggling Bid at Indo-Myanmar Border
Zokhawthar, Mizoram: In a significant breakthrough against drug trafficking, Assam Rifles personnel have seized a colossal consignment of Methamphetamine tablets, valued at an estimated ₹112.40 crore, in Mizoram’s Champhai district. The dramatic incident unfolded near the India-Myanmar border on Friday, the paramilitary force confirmed in a statement released on Saturday.
During a routine area domination patrol in Zokhawthar village, alert Assam Rifles personnel observed two suspicious individuals, each laden with rucksacks, loitering near the international boundary. A swift inspection of their bags yielded a staggering 3.33 lakh tablets of Methamphetamine, commonly known as Meth, a potent stimulant with widespread abuse potential.
However, the pursuit took a dramatic turn as the suspects, upon realising they were cornered, reportedly made a desperate dash for freedom. They leapt into the Tiau river, which demarcates a portion of the Indo-Myanmar border, and successfully made their escape into Myanmar, eluding immediate capture.
The confiscated narcotics, believed to have been earmarked for distribution within Champhai town and potentially beyond, have since been handed over to the Mizoram Police at Zokhawthar. Law enforcement agencies are now tasked with further investigation and initiating appropriate legal proceedings against those involved in this high-stakes smuggling operation. Authorities continue to express grave concerns over the increasing flow of such illicit substances through the porous Indo-Myanmar border, highlighting the ongoing challenge in curbing cross-border drug syndicates.
