Smuggling Racket Busted: Eight Arrested in Tripura Border Crackdown
Dharmanagar, Tripura: In a significant crackdown on illegal border crossings, Tripura authorities have apprehended six Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian touts over two separate incidents of illicit entry from Bangladesh. The arrests, confirmed by officials on Saturday, underscore the ongoing challenges of border management in the region.
The first incident unfolded on Friday evening at the Inter-State Bus Terminal in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, where vigilant Border Security Force (BSF) personnel conducting routine checks intercepted a group. Among them were four individuals identified as Bangladeshi citizens and two Indian men allegedly facilitating their journey further into Indian territory. Srikanta Bardhan, Officer-in-Charge of Dharmanagar police station, confirmed, “During preliminary interrogation, it was revealed that out of six persons, four are Bangladesh citizens. Two others who allegedly guided the Bangladesh citizens to reach Dharmanagar were also detained.” All six were subsequently handed over to the police and booked under relevant sections of the law. “Four Bangladesh nationals were arrested for entering India without valid documents and the remaining two were arrested for helping the infiltrators. Now, they are in judicial remand for 14 days,” Bardhan added.
Later the same day, a separate but related incident saw two more Bangladeshi nationals apprehended in the Belfung area, falling under the Sidhai police station in West Tripura. These individuals were reportedly intercepted by local police while travelling by vehicle from Sidhai to Khowai. Both have been presented before a local court and remanded to judicial custody, with investigations into both incidents now actively underway.
