Manipur Authorities Deny Social Media Reports of Firing Incident in Chanung, Urge Public to Avoid Panic

Imphal: Local authorities in Manipur have categorically denied viral social media claims of a firing incident allegedly targeting farmers in the Chanung area, stating that no such incident has been reported.

Both the Yaingangpokpi and Sagolmang police stations confirmed that no complaint or report has been received from any security forces operating in the region. This has been further corroborated by officials of the 4 Mahar Regiment, currently stationed nearby, who have also denied any knowledge of such an event.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to trace the source of the false claims and determine how the misinformation began circulating. Police are currently working to identify the origin of the posts and understand the intent behind them.

In an official statement, authorities urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could lead to unnecessary panic or unrest in an already sensitive environment. They emphasised the need for a “fact-based approach” and reassured that any credible developments will be shared only through official channels.

A senior official stated, “Relying on hearsay or unverified posts can trigger unnecessary anxiety and harm community harmony. We appeal to the public to exercise discretion and patience.”

Citizens have been advised to stay informed through trusted news outlets and official government updates, and to report any suspicious activity or misinformation circulating online to the authorities.

This measured response comes amid ongoing tensions in parts of Manipur, where misinformation has previously contributed to public unrest. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the region.
