Tripura: Agartala Railway Police Nabs Drug Peddler and Alleged Human Trafficker in Overnight Swoops
Agartala: In a significant twin crackdown, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Agartala, working in close coordination with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), has apprehended a female drug peddler and a suspected human trafficker during two distinct late-night operations conducted on Monday.
The arrests underscore the heightened vigilance of security forces at a crucial transit point.
Juma Debbarma, 26, hailing from Bishrampara, Tisama under Taidu in Gomati district, was taken into custody at the Agartala Railway Station.
Authorities discovered a substantial cache of 21.605 kilograms of dry ganja, meticulously packed into five separate packets and concealed within a trolley bag she was carrying. Officer-in-Charge of GRP, Tapas Das, confirmed that Debbarma’s nefarious intent was to transport the illicit consignment to Karimganj in Assam, with its ultimate destination believed to be the northern state of Punjab
A case has been duly registered against her under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Agartala GRP Police Station, initiating a thorough investigation into the drug trafficking network.
The seized ganja, a significant haul, is estimated to command a street value of approximately Rs 7.5 lakh once it reaches Punjab, where reports suggest a kilogram of the contraband fetches nearly Rs 35,000. This recovery deals a considerable blow to the illicit drug trade operating through railway routes.
In a separate, equally crucial late-night operation, the GRP, this time in a collaborative effort with the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Bamutia Outpost Police, successfully apprehended Kamal Das, 43, a resident of Bugjur village under Lefunga Police Station in West Tripura district. Das stands accused of involvement in a human trafficking case, a grave charge that is now the subject of intense interrogation by a special police team.
Officials have indicated their suspicion that others from the same region may also be intricately linked to this deeply disturbing trafficking network, suggesting a wider conspiracy.
Both the accused individuals are slated to be produced before the court today. The police are expected to seek their remand, a crucial step to facilitate further investigation and unravel the full extent of their alleged criminal activities.
