Sikkim Department Cultivates Green Initiative for Staff Well-being

Gangtok – In a pioneering effort to infuse some much-needed green into the daily grind, the Sikkim Food and Civil Supplies Department has rolled out a unique directive, tasking every officer and staff member with adopting at least one flower pot for their office space.

The move, aimed at nurturing both nature and morale, is already seeing flower pots lining the department’s corridors, eagerly awaiting their new caretakers.

The initiative, formalised in a circular issued on Monday by Secretary Anil Rai, goes beyond mere aesthetics. It’s a strategic step towards fostering personal accountability and enhancing mental well-being among employees. Rai’s directive clearly states, “All officers and staff are encouraged to adopt at least one flower pot and take responsibility for its upkeep. The care and maintenance will rest with the individual adopting it.” This emphasis on individual responsibility is particularly pertinent given that the department currently operates without a dedicated gardener, making the success of this green endeavour entirely dependent on collective participation.

Officials within the department view this as more than just a beautification project; it’s an opportunity for staff to reconnect with nature, even amidst their demanding schedules. The expectation is that nurturing these small pockets of greenery will not only brighten the workspace but also contribute significantly to a healthier and more positive office environment. The department firmly believes that maintaining some greenery is crucial, not just for visual appeal but for the holistic improvement of workplace health and overall staff morale.
