Assam CM Clarifies Stance on Immigration, Slams TMC for ‘Misrepresentation’

Guwahati, Assam: In a robust defence of his government’s immigration policy, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today unequivocally dismissed accusations from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), asserting their claims were a calculated distortion designed to protect illegal Bangladeshi Muslim infiltrators.

Taking to his official X handle, CM Sarma stated with absolute clarity that Assam’s long-standing battle is not against Bengali-speaking individuals, but exclusively against unlawful Muslim immigration from the neighbouring country.

The Chief Minister highlighted Assam’s decades-long “relentless war” against what he termed “illegal infiltration of Bangladeshi Muslims,” characterising the TMC’s portrayal of his comments as anti-Bengali as a “desperate ploy” to shield these very infiltrators. He emphasised that Bengali-speaking Indian citizens within Assam fully grasp and endorse the government’s resolute efforts. “Let it be made absolutely clear: in Assam, every Indian citizen—including Bengali-speaking people—fully understands our position and supports our uncompromising stand against illegal Muslim immigration from Bangladesh,” CM Sarma affirmed. This forceful clarification comes amidst a swirling political controversy, with TMC leaders having publicly criticised Sarma’s previous remarks, alleging they were directed at the Bengali community. The Chief Minister’s strong response aims to demarcate a clear line between the issue of illegal immigration and the entitlements of Indian citizens, underscoring that the demographic fabric of Assam is a matter of non-negotiable importance.
