Congress Top Brass Convenes in Assam to Revitalise State Unit
Guwahati, Assam: In a significant move aimed at fortifying its organisational structure ahead of next year’s assembly elections, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi today undertook a day-long visit to Assam. The senior leaders engaged in extensive deliberations with the party’s state unit functionaries, focusing on strategies to invigorate the organisation and chalk out a clear roadmap for future political challenges.
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressed his honour in welcoming Kharge and Gandhi to Guwahati for this “crucial meeting.” He shared that the closed-door discussions, attended by members of the Political Affairs Committee, PCC office bearers, MPs, MLAs, Frontal Heads, and DCC Presidents, were deeply centred on strengthening the party and preparing for upcoming electoral contests.
Beyond the internal party discussions, Kharge and Gandhi also met with representatives of tribal communities and individuals facing various forms of hardship, including persecution, displacement threats, and other harassment, at a hotel near the airport. This interaction reportedly formed part of their initial engagements of the day.
The two prominent Congress leaders are scheduled to participate in another meeting with party functionaries later this afternoon at Chaygaon, approximately 40 kilometres from Guwahati. Their arrival at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport earlier in the day saw them greeted warmly by state party leaders with traditional Assamese ‘gamosas’. This visit marks the first time the party’s top leadership has engaged with the state unit since Gaurav Gogoi assumed the role of Assam Congress President, setting the stage for intensified political activity in the run-up to the 2026 assembly elections. Kharge and Gandhi are expected to depart from Guwahati in the evening.
