Guwahati Shines Bright with “Promising Swachh Shehar” Award, National Rank 44

Guwahati – In a proud moment for Assam, Guwahati has been felicitated with the prestigious “Promising Swachh Shehar Award” in the 3-10 lakh population category at the national Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings. The announcement, made today at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, marks a significant leap for the city’s sanitation and cleanliness drives.

The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) secured an impressive national rank of 44 within its population bracket, underscoring the substantial progress made in urban cleanliness. This recognition comes as part of the annual awards ceremony under the nationwide Swachh Bharat Mission, which honours India’s cleanest cities.

Beyond the primary accolade, Guwahati also earned the much-coveted ODF+ (Open Defecation Free Plus) certification and a “Garbage Free City One Star” rating. These additional certifications highlight the consistent efforts and sustained improvements in the city’s waste management practices and overall urban sanitation infrastructure.

The Mayor of Guwahati Municipal Corporation lauded this achievement as a testament to the strong collaborative spirit between the civic authorities and the city’s residents. This award, the Mayor noted, validates the ongoing sanitation programmes that have fundamentally reshaped Guwahati’s approach to waste management and public hygiene.

The Swachh Survekshan, an annual initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, rigorously evaluates cities on various parameters, including solid waste management, restoration of water bodies, and citizen feedback. This year’s comprehensive assessment covered cities across the nation, with rankings determined through detailed field surveys and advanced digital monitoring.

The awards ceremony served to spotlight Guwahati’s commendable progress under the national cleanliness mission, a pivotal programme driving urban sanitation enhancements across the country since its inception. The city’s recognition not only celebrates its individual success but also mirrors the broader nationwide endeavour to elevate the quality of life through systematic waste management and active community participation.

Municipal officials, while expressing their delight, stressed that this achievement is not an endpoint but rather a milestone in an ongoing commitment. They affirmed plans to further uphold and expand the current sanitation standards throughout Guwahati, ensuring a cleaner and healthier urban environment for all.
