Assam: Morigaon Man Handed 20-Year Rigorous Imprisonment in Landmark POCSO Verdict
Morigaon: In a significant ruling underscoring the stringent enforcement of child protection laws, Mithun Bangthai, a resident of Garmari village, has been sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexual offences against a minor. The verdict, delivered today by Additional Sessions Judge cum Special Judge (POCSO) N.A. Ahmed, marks a crucial conviction under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in Morigaon district.
The judgment, stemming from POCSO Case No. 92/2024 (originating from Morigaon Police Station Case No. 110/2024), saw Bangthai, son of Jangbo Bangthai, receiving the maximum sentence under Section 6 of the POCSO Act. In addition to the two-decade prison term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000. Should Bangthai fail to pay the fine, an additional six months of imprisonment will be added to his sentence. The court noted that Bangthai had already spent one year, two months, and eleven days in custody during the trial, a period which will be deducted from his total sentence in accordance with legal provisions.
This conviction reaffirms the judicial system’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding children from sexual exploitation and abuse. The dedicated POCSO courts, specifically established to address such sensitive cases involving minors, play a pivotal role in ensuring swift and just outcomes. Following the pronouncement of the sentence, Mithun Bangthai was committed to the Morigaon District Jail to commence his term, with the warrant of commitment issued on the same day, authorising the jail authorities to proceed with the execution of the court’s judgment.
